Parent Roles & Expectations
Get geared up: make sure your rider has a bike that is safe to ride and appropriate equipment. Visit https://redwoodracing.org/faqs for a list of equipment. See details below for discounts
Being there for your volunteer slots and being available if your rider needs you are your most critical jobs. Many riders have their own pre-race routine and go into the “zone” of preparing. Learn what your rider’s individual needs are and know that the coaches and their teammates play a big role in getting them ready for the race. After the race, they typically do a warm down - biking around the venue, then they show up at the Pit Zone ravenous!
● Always let kids eat first if they arrive to wait in the BBQ line, especially when they arrive famished after a race!
● Remember: Riders have priority for chairs + bike stands + shelving unit storage space.
● Wear a name tag the first 2-3 races – it helps all of us!
● Remember to protect yourself from sunburns, poison oak and ticks! We have sunscreen, technu and repellent on hand at the Welcome Table.
● Always look for ways to be helpful around the pit zone – even if you’re not working a shift.
● Take some cowbells out with you on the racecourse – and position yourself on the hardest hill to cheer our riders on!
● Stay for Podiums! It’s good for the team and shows solid sportsmanship.
Volunteering
The season and race day events would not be able to run without the support of parent volunteers. Outside of coaching there are plenty of ways to get involved with the team. It is an experience like no other and you wont regret being part of the stoke during the year and on race day!
ALL PARENTS ARE REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER FOR NORCAL RACE DAY AND/OR OUR TEAM PITZONE AT EVERY RACE.
Races are an all day event and are frequently held in remote locations with no running water. The team provides lunch and snacks to approximately 75-100 people at race venues. Because of this it is essential that everyone works together to support the team.
Norcal Volunteers
In addition to helping out in the Redwood Pit Zone and the Feed Zone, parents are required to volunteer at least one time each season with NorCal. Our pit zone location at races is determined by the number of volunteer shifts we have signed up for. The entire race is run by volunteers, so your help is needed and appreciated. Norcal Volunteer sign ups are published a few days before each race. The premium spots go quickly. Sign up and register prior to the first race for ease of sign up! We will send out a link and notify you of sign ups when they are live!
